黃精、人參、靈芝、茯苓共稱中醫四大仙藥。

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, herbs & medicine are classified into 3 grades:

  • Upper Grade (Shang Pin): Safe, nourishing herbs for long-term use, like ginseng, which boosts energy and immunity.

  • Middle Grade (Zhong Pin): Herbs for specific ailments, with moderate risks if overused.

  • Lower Grade (Xia Pin): Potent, toxic substances for serious conditions, requiring caution.

黃精 HuangJing aka Siberia Landpick (Polygonatum Sibiricum)

  • Nourishes the kidney

  • Moistens the lung

  • Fortifies the spleen

  • Supplements Qi

  • Strengthening sinew, bones and marrow

Apply to cough due to deficiency of yin, dry cough due to dryness of lung, spleen deficiency and fatigue, low food intake and dry mouth, diabetes, weakness of waist and knees due to deficiency of kidney, impotence and emission, tinnitus and dim vision, prematurely grey, thin and weakness of body and deficiency, leprosy and tinea.

人参 ​Renshen or 山蔘 aka Ginseng

  • South China Ginseng 人参 (Panax Notoginseng) / Korean Ginseng 高麗參 (Panax Ginseng) / American Ginseng 花旗参 (Panax Quinquefolius)

  • White Ginseng: Fresh & dried, Red Ginseng: Steamed & dried

True ginseng plants belong only to the genus Panax. Several other plants are sometimes referred to as ginseng, but they are from a different genus or even family. Siberian ginseng is in the same family, but not genus, as true ginseng.

  • Angelica sinensis (female ginseng, DangGui 当归)

  • Oplopanax horridus (Alaskan ginseng)

  • Pfaffia paniculata (Brazilian ginseng, Suma)

  • Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Prince ginseng)

  • Schisandra chinensis (five-flavoured berry)

  • Trichopus zeylanicus (Kerala ginseng)

  • Withania somnifera (Indian ginseng, Ashwagandha)

  • Eurycoma longifolia (Malaysian ginseng, Tongkat Ali)

茯苓 FuLing aka Poria (Wolfiporia Extensa)

何首烏 HeShouWu aka FoTi (Polygonum Multiflorum)

何首烏狀如人形。《開寶本草》稱何首烏「黑鬚髮,悅顏色,久服長筋骨,益精髓,延年不老」。

中國古代「四仙藥」(何首烏、黃精、地黃與靈芝)之一。

桂皮 GuiPi or 肉桂 RouGui aka Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Verum or Cinnamomum Zeylanicum)

The Ceylon Cinnamon, after its origins in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), is considered to be "true cinnamon", but most cinnamon in international commerce is derived from four other species, usually and more correctly referred to as "Cassia": 

  • Cinnamomum Burmanni (Indonesian cinnamon or Padang cassia)

  • Cinnamomum Cassia (Chinese cinnamon or Chinese cassia)

  • Cinnamomum Loureiroi (Saigon cinnamon or Vietnamese cassia)

  • Cinnamomum Citriodorum (Malabar cinnamon)

 

 


黄芪 HuangQí or 北芪 BeiQí (Astragalus Membranaceus)

杜仲 DuZhong (Eucommia Ulmoides)

Used to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, sexual dysfunction, cancers, metabolic syndrome, and neurologic diseases.

甘草 GanCao (Glycyrrhiza Uralensis)

Licorice works to tonify spleen qi, moisten lung, clear heat, and tonify heart qi.

菊花 JuHua aka Chrysanthemum (Flos Chrysanthemi)

  • Clearing Heat: This flower is believed to have a cooling effect, helping to clear excess heat from the body. This makes it useful for treating conditions like fever, headache, and inflammation.

  • Improving Vision: This herb is often used to improve eyesight and treat eye problems such as redness, dryness, and blurred vision.

  • Calming the Liver: In TCM, the liver is associated with emotions like anger and frustration. Ju Hua is believed to help calm the liver and reduce these emotions.

  • Treating Respiratory Conditions: Ju Hua is sometimes used to treat respiratory issues like coughs, colds, and sore throat.
