The Sympathetic & Parasympathetic Nervous System

In holistic healthcare, a person is not considered health if the mind is sick.

The nervous system and the lymphatic system are how our bodies manage the stress, emotional triggers, and trauma we experience in our daily lives.

The Sympathetic Nervous System is often called the “fight or flight” system because it prepares the body for stressful or emergency situations. When activated, it increases the body's alertness, energy expenditure, and prepares it to either confront or escape a threat.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System is often called the “rest and digest” system because it is responsible for conserving energy and promoting functions that help the body relax and recuperate.

Interaction Between the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Systems

-
Antagonistic Effect: These two systems often have opposite effects. For instance, while the sympathetic system increases heart rate, the parasympathetic system slows it down.
-
Dual Control: Most organs receive both sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation, but they often work in a complementary manner. For example, the sympathetic system may increase blood flow to muscles during physical activity, while the parasympathetic system ensures that digestion is prioritized during times of rest.
-
Balance & Homeostasis: Together, the SNS and PNS maintain the body’s homeostasis by adjusting responses based on the body’s current needs. The sympathetic system prepares the body for action in stressful situations, while the parasympathetic system helps the body recover and restore balance.
