WHAT IS IMPERIALISM?

Imperialism is a policy or practice in which a powerful country extends its political, economic, military, or cultural influence over another country or territory.

This often involves one country dominating another to gain wealth, resources, strategic advantages, or greater international power. Imperialism can involve directly controlling another territory, such as establishing a colony, or indirectly influencing another country through economic pressure, political interference, or military power.

Economic Exploitation

Colonies often supplied cheap raw materials and purchased manufactured goods from the imperial power. In many cases, colonial governments prioritised exports over local needs.

This could make colonies dependent on a narrow range of commodities, leaving them vulnerable to changes in world prices.

Political Domination

Colonised populations often had little say in how they were governed. Imperial authorities could impose laws, collect taxes, seize land, and suppress resistance.

Cultural Erasure

Imperialism spread languages, religions, education systems, and legal practices. Some people adopted these changes, while others resisted them. In many societies, indigenous traditions and institutions were marginalised, deliberately undermined, or even erased.
