THE FIVE HINDRANCES :

The Five Hindrances are obstacles in having a fruitful meditation session, in attaining jhana, and ultimately in attaining Nibana.

The Five Hindrances are as follows :

1. Kamacchanda (Sensual Desire)
2. Vyapada (Feelings of hostility, resentment, hatred or bitterness)
3. Thina-Middha (Laziness & Drowsiness)
4. Uddhacca-Kukkucca (Restlessness due to Guilt-Worry)
5. Vicikiccha (Indecisiveness due to Doubt/Suspicion)

Buddha teaches us 6 ways of eradicating these hindrances :

1. Perceiving the loathsomeness of the subject
2. Constant meditation on the impure
3. Guarding the 6 sense spheres
4. Moderation in eating
5. Good (noble) friendship
6. Appropriate conversation
