THE FIVE AGGREGATES (KHANDA)

Khandha ( Sanskrit : Skanda ) is the five components that constitute the concept of "yourself", which are :

1. Rupa (Form)

  • Earth (Pathavi)

  • Water (Apo)

  • Fire (Tejo)

  • Wind (Vayo)

2. Vedana (Feeling)

  • pleasant

  • unpleasant

  • neutral

Feelings arise when there is contact between the six sense organs (Eye, Ear, Nose, Tongue, Body, Mind)
and the six sensory objects (Sight, Sound, Odour, Taste, Touch, Mental Object).

3. Sanna (Perception)
Related to the six sensory objects.

4. Sankhara (Thought Patterns)
Thought patterns derived from the six sensory objects.

5. Vinnana (Consciousness)
Grasps the characteristics of the six sensory objects.

  • Visual consciousness

  • Auditory consciousness

  • Olfactory consciousness

  • Gustatory consciousness

  • Tactile consciousness

  • Mental consciousness

They are constantly in the process of change, and thus do not constitute self (Anatta).
It is through the Panca-Khanda that attachment (Upadana) occur and through the Panca-Khandha that suffering (Dukkha) arises.
